Singers sizzle to fiery music

NANAIMO - FlamenCubana brings passion and fire to the Port Theatre stage Saturday (Nov. 21), 8 p.m.

Flamenco dancers sizzle across the stage to the fiery beat of Cuban music during FlamenCubana’s upcoming performance at the Port Theatre.

It features 12 artists, from Spain, Cuba and Venezuela, who banded together to celebrate the rich musical cultures that were created from centuries of contact between Latin American counties and Spain.

FlamenCubana is Saturday (Nov. 21) at 8 p.m.

The quintet, El Grupo Cubano Brisas del Palmar, perform traditional Cuban music which includes guaracha, merengue and cumbia. The show also features Pastora Galván, one of the most sought-after flamenco dancers in the world, and Antón Jimenez, a flamenco guitarist and composer.

Rosario Montoya, known as Gypsy Queen, has been playing the piano since she was four and by 16 was a concert pianist. Audience members will also hear the song stylings of Jafelin, considered one of Canada’s pre-eminent flamenco and Latin singers.

Tickets range in price from $58 to $65. Call 250-754-8550 or go to www.porttheatre.com.
