Singing to get to Scotland

Pleasing Pains, Obsessive Dames, and Other Delights — it’s a title that promises musical delights and certainly suggests a lighthearted concert.

Chemainus soprano Barbara Cole Walton plans to deliver on both those accounts at her fundraising recital Friday, May 27, at St. Michael’s Church, 2858 Mill St., Chemainus, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will be an entertaining hour of songs to do with love, in all its wonder and folly. She will be accompanied on the piano by Csinszka Rédai, a vocal coach and accompanist at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Last year, Walton sang a recital to raise funds for a summer opera program in France. This year she is headed just as far afield, but for a considerably longer time, having been accepted at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama to pursue a Master of Music in Opera.

The two-year program is renowned for the quality of training it gives its students, and the academy’s close relationship with Scottish Opera has been especially helpful in kick-starting young careers.
