The winter season starts next week for Sing YourJoy, Victoria’s young adult chorus, based out of Oak Bay United Church.

SingYourJoy is a non-auditioned chorus for young adults from all walks of life, joining their voices together in an exuberant expression of joy, building friendships and growing community.

“It’s a youth choir for pretty much anybody and we’d love to have more people,” said Amanda Anderson, who joined last January.

“While we sing out of the Oak Bay United Church, it’s not a religious choir.”

The non-driver, who doesn’t live in Oak Bay, finds the commute to the Monday night rehearsals readily accessible by multiple bus routes.

“They’re really easy to get to,” Anderson said. “And in Oak Bay, being that this is Victoria, it’s only an hour walk anywhere.”

Weekly Monday rehearsals at Oak Bay United Church run from 7 to 9 p.m. For the first two weeks in January, doors open at 6 p.m. for registration.

A non-auditioned mixed-voice community chorus, open to all people ages 16 to 29, SingYourJoy funds two seasons – September to December, and January to April.

Co-founded and co-directed by Christine Chepyha and Gordon Miller, SingYourJoy presents a concert at the end of each season.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Anderson said. “I will stick with it until I age out.”

The chorus welcomes new and returning singers on Jan. 2 and 9 only at Oak Bay United Church (1355 Mitchell St.). There are no fees for singers to participate.
