SURREY — Slow ticket sales have sunk a charity concert featuring Canadian singer Alfie Zappacosta.

The event, which was to take place Friday, May 1 at the 1,052-seat Bell Performing Arts Centre, was organized to benefit Surrey Hospice Society and Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society.

Word of the cancelled concert was sent in an email from the hospice society on Thursday (April 23).

“The Surrey Hospice Society and Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society did not want to do a disservice to our corporate sponsors and guests by going forward with a concert that had a (shortfall) in ticket sales,” the email stated.

“We believe we have a responsibility to champion and support community-based children’s programs in the City of Surrey and will move forward with other planned events this year.”

The $60-a-ticket concert was to have former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts serve as emcee.

Those who purchased tickets to the concert can call the venue box office for a refund, at 604-507-6355.
