The skilled arts community of Abbotsford will be celebrated at this year’s Song, Strings and Steps.
Talent is the theme for next weekend’s variety show at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, which is celebrating its 11th anniversary.
The event combines professional and amateur artists, dance and theatre.
“Instead of using a specific theme for the music, this year we are representing and honouring the artists themselves and their talent,” said Calvin Dyck, the artistic director and conductor of the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra.
In the past, themes have included everything from movies and world journeys, to pirates, transportation, country hoe-downs and chocolate.
Dyck wanted to ensure that this year’s show celebrated every aspect of the arts.
Along with show designer Sylvia Friesen, they decided to combine costumes, props, lighting and special effects with classical and popular music.
The show will feature the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, Charlene Hart – a top 10 contender for So You Think You Can Dance Canada, and the Abbotsford Skipping Sensations.
An array of young talent will also be on display, including Canadian yo-yo champion Charles Haycock and nine-year-old ukulele player Matthew Cheverie.
B.C.’s top ballroom dancers will be gracing the stage along with music from Phantom of the Opera and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
Hosting the event is comedian Clifford Prang, best known for his work with the Panic Squad and for recently hosting the variety show, Fest of Fools.
Songs, Strings & Steps takes place on Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m. and on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way.
