Victoria band Ozmoses is the featured act at the Sooke Folk Music Society’s October Coffee House this Saturday (Oct. 20).
Ozmoses is an acoustic trio with a repertoir packed with an eclectic range of songs drawn from Canadiana, blues, pop, country gospel and folk genres.
The members take turns at singing lead and their performances feature rich three-part harmonies, creative arrangements, and well-defined instrumentation.
Paul Winfield migrated from Ontario in 1971 and began working for the CN Rail in Kamloops, fostering his love for train songs. He plays rhythm and lead guitars in the band. Paul co-founded Ozmoses in 2011 and recently moved to Sooke.
Vancouver Island native Patty Castle comes from a Celtic folk-rock background. She played bass and flutes in the Victoria bands High Tide Trio and Stone Whistle and fold band Chattering Class. To Ozmoses, she brings stand-up bass and flute.
Vivian Sinclair grew up in a musical family in Alberta. She played mandolin in a bluegrass band and started playing fiddle when she moved to Victoria in 1990. Her fiddle completes the unique Ozmoses sound.
Since 2013 Ozmoses has been performing at local coffee shops, restaurants and folk clubs, as well as fundraisers, benefits and celebrations.
Ozmoses’ song choices are unique and varied – from foot-stomping gospel to driving blues, sing-along Canadian folk to pop. You can check out a sampling of the band’s sound as www.ozmoses.ca.
The October Coffee House is at Holy Trinity Church, 1962 Murray Rd. Admission is $7.50 at the door, $5 for performers, and no charged for children (but costumes are encouraged). Potions and treats are available at intermission.
The music starts at 7:30 p.m. with an open stage, followed by Ozmoses at 9 p.m.
