The never ending pursuit of love has always shaped our culture and experiences. Yet it remains abstract in definition.
The Sooke Community Choir offers its take on romance and passion with its spring offering of #modernlove.
#modernlove expresses the chaotic and turbulent emotion that is love, said Bruce Ruddell, the choir’s artistic director.
Through arrangements of pop hits and rock classics like emotional ballads by Christina Perri, Elton John and Meghan Trainor to the passion of A Great Big World and the zaniness of the B-52s, the 55-member choir brings an eclectic selection of music to the performance.
“It’s music that we know, and it’s around us all the time,” Ruddell said in an interview.
“I came up with #modernlove to be kind of cheeky with the whole Twitter thing – the Twitterverse.”
The “show stopper,” Ruddell said, is the choir’s rendition of the B-52s’ classic Love Shack in an musical arrangement by U.S. composer Deke Sharon.
“I think its better than the B-52s version,” Ruddell said, adding two of the choir’s solosit will handle the harmony and another who will do the rap piece.
The choir will be joined by accompaniest Kathy Russell on piano and by Victoria based multi-instrumentalist Jeff Poynter.
“We’re pretty excited about the show,” Ruddell said.
#modernlove runs May 3 to 5 at Sooke Community Hall. Tickets are $20 (under 16 free) and available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Stick in the Mud Coffee House, at the door, or online at eventbrite.com.
