West Shore residents won’t have to travel to Sooke next weekend to enjoy the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra’s last program of the 2016-2017 season.
“Our musicians are excited to perform in Colwood’s beautiful venue with its state-of-the-art acoustics and spacious backstage facilities” said Maestro Norman Nelson in a statement.
Presenting Harmony by the Sea, the orchestra will take over the Teechamitsa Theatre in Royal Bay secondary, 3500 Ryder Hesjedal Way on June 11.
Harmony by the Sea is a three-part program that includes performances of Adagio from Spartacus Suite No. 2 by Aram Khachaturian, Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 18 in C minor by Sergi Rachmaninoff – featuring soloist Ya-Ping Huang – and Sea Cantata by Nicholas Fairbank.
Fairbank, a Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra choral director noted he “wanted to write something that would challenge our singers but is equally enjoyable to sing as it is to listen to.” This martime-themed selection was chosen to honour these communities by the sea and to mark Canada’s 150th birthday with a Canadian composer.
If you can’t make the Colwood performance, there is one the previous night (June 10) at the Sooke Community Hall, 2037 Shields Rd. Both performances start at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults or $15 for seniors. For more information or tickets, go to sookephil.ca or phone 250-419-3569.
