From Rosa Parks to Nellie McClung, women have come along way since the inaugural International Women’s Day a century ago.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the day that honours all women, local singer/songwriter Tanya Lipscomb has put together a special concert to aid women in need.
The event takes place at the Okanagan Centre for Spiritual Living Tuesday.
Lipscomb will be joined by fellow artists Kailee Duggan and Sherrie Erickson to raise awareness and money for the Vernon Transition House.
“There will be a donation box at the door and also a box for donations of women’s and children’s gently-used clean clothing,” said Lipscomb, who currently hails from Vernon.
The mother of three, who has been playing music since she was three years old, is an award-winning songwriter who writes about social justice, heartbreak, love, family life, good times and joy.
A musical chameleon, Lipscomb’s songs are influenced by the blues, jazz, folk, rock, funk and country.
Duggan, from Vernon, is a 16-year-old singing sensation who won second place in last year’s Our Kids Have Talent.
“She has captivated audiences up and down the Okanagan with her contemporary folk style, guitar playing and strong voice,” said Lipscomb.
Erickson is a mother of two and a gifted singer/songwriter who sings about the trials and tribulations of life and love.
“Her honest and poignant style of writing places her up there with John Prine and Leonard Cohen,” said Lipscomb. “She is a pleasure to listen to and her style is country, folk, adult contemporary.”
The 100th International Women’s Day celebration at the Centre for Spiritual Living, 2913, 29th Ave., starts Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a $10 suggested donation at the door.
