Spider has happy face

Unusual markings seen on local arachnid

A spider in a window of a home on the Flats in Clearwater has what looks like a happy face on its belly. The spider appears to be a type of orb weaver called the cat-faced spider (Araneus gemmoides, also called the monkey-faced spider). Despite its relatively large size (body about 3/4' x 3/4'), the spider is harmless to humans and beneficial because of the many garden insects they eat.
