A listing of events happening around the city for the week of January 18

SAS shows

Twenty-eight members of the Salmon Arm Secondary Grade 11-12 dance program perform in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 in the Sullivan campus theatre.

Musical theatre students take over the theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 when they present Shake, Rattle and Roll, music of the 1950s.

Tickets for both shows are $5 at the door.

 

 

Writers group

Shuswap Writers’ Group meets Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mall at Piccadilly boardroom. Drop-ins are welcome. Call Shirley DeKelver at 250-835-4544.

 

 

Opera

The Metropolitan Opera’s Emmy Award-winning series The Met: Live in HD continues with the live transmission of The Enchanted Island at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Salmar Classic Theatre.

Tickets are $24 for adults, $18 for students and children and are available at the Salmar Grand.

 

 

Support Kara

Canadian Bandstand presents Charlie & the Majic Boyz with their high-energy rock from the 1950s and 1990s at Sturgis North Pub Saturday, Jan 21. The $5 cover charge will go to support Kara Wagner, the Sicamous woman whose fiance and children died in a tragic New Year’s Day fire.

 

 

Theatre reading

The first of Shuswap Theatre’s staged play readings of the year takes place at the theatre Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Directed by James Bowlby, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, was written as a radio drama. Enjoy the story, language and characterization of a fine script. Cost is $5 at the door.

 

 

Film fare

Shuswap Film Society presents the Korean film Poetry at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Salmar Classic. In present day South Korea, a small rural community is shocked by the suicide drowning of a high school girl and a woman who has been diagnosed with the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease, registers for a poetry class.

 

 

Hitch fest

The Classics at the Classic film series continues with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1943 film Shadow of a Doubt, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 at the Salmar Classic.

 

 

Jazz club

Warm up cold January with the hot sounds of Cuban jazz from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at SAGA Public Art Gallery. Hosted by Sandy Cameron, admission to jazz club performances is by donation.
