Three talented young musicians will capture audiences at Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra’s (NCO) Soundscape for Spring concert in Parksville March 16.
The trio of Jasmine Mather, Joanna Lee and Hannah Stroink will perform J.S. Bach’s “Concerto for 3 Violins and String Orchestra in D” during the program. Mather attends NDSS, studies violin with Karl Rainer and is in her third year with the NCO.
Lee moved to Nanaimo from Korea and attends Dover Bay Secondary, studies with Leslie Krull and has been a member of the NCO for 2 years. Stroink is home-schooled, studies violin.
To celebrate the advent of spring, the NCO is presenting a wonderful and varied repertoire for strings. From the Baroque, in addition to the Bach Concerto, the program includes Handel’s “Concerto Grosso Op. 6 no. 3”. From the late Romantic, there is “Serenade No. II” by Austrian, Robert Fuchs—one of Mahler’s teachers, and also Tchaikowsky’s moving and elegant, “Elegie”. And for contrast, the program includes contemporary composer, John Rutter’s “Suite for Strings”, a light and airy rendering of four English folk songs.
The show takes place March 16 at 2:30 pm at St. Edmund’s Anglican Church. Tickets are available at the door and at the Port Theatre Box Office in Nanaimo. They cost $20, $10 for students and children under 12 are free.
