This St. Patrick’s Day will bring another large-scale live music evening to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 122 in Golden.
Last year’s St. Patrick’s Day show was such a success, organizer and musician John Jenkins is bringing it back, and expanding its talent this year.
The evening of live music stretches across genres, incorporating Celtic tunes in with folk, upbeat music, and brings out the rock and roll to finish off the night.
Most of the musicians are local, with the exception of one man from Calgary, who attended the event last year and really wanted to play this year.
“Last year being the first one, it was actually put together pretty last minute, but it really went off” Jenkins said. “Last year it came up as an idea to get some new people into the legion, and then it just really went off, so doing it again made sense.”
Nine bands will come together to provide music to the crowds at the legion on Saturday night. Beginning at 7 p.m., there should be a band on every hour, with the exception of some shorter acts, and Celtic music being sprinkled in between.
Dust on Crust, Krista and the Krybabies, Kate Smyles, Carl Trinkwon and the Masters of Nun, Evan Peters- Celtic Troubadour, Sunken Explorers, Pablo Euphoria and the Slinkies, Small Town Revival, and Easy Ruckus will perform all night, bringing a variety of genres to the stage.
“Being a family guy, I don’t really have that much of an opportunity to go out on other nights, so this is really an opportunity for me to showcase people and be a part of it and help organize it,” Jenkins said, adding that he attends the Sunday night weekly jam night in town. “I really like being a part of the local art and music scene. I personally enjoy the challenge of it all. Doing sounds for that many bands is a good challenge.”
Jenkins hinted that there may be a “Small Town Ruckus” near the end of the evening, since many of the bands that close out the show are used to jamming together and do occasionally mash up their bands to play music together.
“It was fun last year to see some intermingling,” Jenkins said. “The really fun thing last year was all the guitars were off to the side, and inevitably we all ended up hanging out, and it was a really fun social night of hanging out as a big group of musicians locally.”
The Legion is packed full of activities on Saturday, beginning with the weekly meat draw, serving up an Irish meal for dinner, and music going from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.
There are no advance tickets, so be sure to arrive early to catch all of the musicians and enjoy an evening of celebration and live music.
