Start the new year with Voices Three on Jan. 3.

Voices Three fans will be pleased to learn that they can still start off the new year in 2012 by attending a fundraising concert for the Comox Valley Hospice Society (CVHS).

Comox Valley songwriters Helen Austin, Sue Pyper, and Judy Wing will be performing on January 3rd at the Mex Pub as part of the 1st Tuesday Fundraiser concert series.

Adding to the musical diversity of the evening will be the musical accompaniment of Bruce Wing, percussionist Jim Stepan and jazz violinist Blaine Dunaway. The evening starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is by cash donation for CVHS or a food donation for the CV Food Bank Society.

The songwriting trio Voices Three has been performing since 2006, creating a show each year to raise both awareness and money for the Comox Valley Hospice Society. From the lyrical edges of self-assertion to orchestrated kazoo rhapsodies, Voices Three fund raising concerts have been filled with magical moments that endear these talented women to their audiences.

Typically these sold-out shows have been ticketed events, however this year admission is by donation to CVHS or a food donation for the food bank. The evening promises beautifully blended harmonies, poignant and insightful lyrics, and a few laughs based on familiar experiences.

Part of the appeal of Voices Three is the diversity of their material, an eclectic mix of genres that visit everything from jazz and bluegrass to alternative pop. Each showcase their own songs in turn, and combine their talents to support each other to create a magical synergy.

With the added talents of Blaine Dunaway, Jim Stepan, and Bruce Wing, it is sure to be a great show.

“These are all accomplished singers and songwriters,” writes previous audience member Kybor Tylor, “and each of the three has powerful gifts of their own. Together, they are a force. Sue Pyper’s generosity in sharing her honest heart and self, Helen Austin’s glory in the scintillating fireworks of her mind, and Judy Wing’s philosophical landscapes, illuminated by wit, all come to the stage in a wonderful stew of moments.”

Voices Three supporters feel as though they have experienced something more than great music; they share a special camaraderie with their audience.

Describing last year’s performance, audience member Bee Wolf Ray writes, “The atmosphere was intimate for such a large crowd. The performers engaged with each other and the audience as if we were all sitting around a kitchen table, yet with an ambience of smooth professionalism…the band was superb. The whole thing worked for me.”

Recalling last year’s performance at the Sid Williams Theatre, Carolyn Touhey writes, “…a spell wove us all together into a sweet harmony, riding swells and dips of mood through various fascinating musical landscapes.  By the end, a standing ovation brought us surging to our feet… silly, dreamy grins were evident everywhere.”

Mark your calendars for Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and come out to enjoy an evening of fun and music and start the new year with a smile. The event is sponsored by the Mex Pub and all money raised at the 1st Tuesday Fundraising event will go to support the Comox Valley Hospice Society’s vision of providing the community with a residential hospice.
