A trip to Port Alberni’s regional library offers a glance at movie-themed artwork done by Grade 9 and 10 high school students.
Alberni District Secondary School students from Anne Ostwald’s Grade 10 art classes have been busy designing posters of film adaptations of a favourite book to display at the library.
Wanting to showcase the students’ talent at the library, Robin Kelley, customer service librarian, visited the high school in October to introduce the idea to the classes.
“They were to choose a book and design a movie poster as though it’s being adapted into a movie,” Kelley said.
With close to 90 posters in total, six will be on display at the library each week through winter and spring.
Grade 10 student, Sacred Brown Collicott illustrated an Alice in Wonderland themed poster using black felt pen.
“I like the idea of another world that’s full of different creatures,” Collicott said of why she chose Alice in Wonderland.
Collicott, who has been interested in art since a young age, said this is the first time her artwork has been on display.

Grade 9 student, Madeline Duperron, has also been interested in art since a young age and said other than at the Fall Fair, this is her first time having artwork on display.
She illustrated a movie poster for the science fiction fantasy novels Artemis Fowl with paint and black felt pen.
“Artemis Fowl is a book for kids and teens…It’s one of my favourite books,” Duperron said.
She hopes to continue with art throughout high school because, she says, it’s fun and gives her a break from her busy schedule.
