Styles blended for show

NANAIMO - Vancouver Island University faculty present Meridian Is: Collaborative Performance Research at Malaspina Theatre Jan. 22.

Vancouver Island University’s Arts and Humanities Colloquium series begins this spring with a multimedia research project created by faculty members.

The project, Meridian Is: Collaborative Performance Research, features four professors, Robin Davies who performs electronic music; Kevin Mazutinec, who shows digital video and animation; Justin McGrail, who performs a spoken-word piece; and Marian van der Zon, who performs on various musical instruments.

“The goal is to immerse the audience in the themes of technology, humanity and their offspring,” said Davies in a press release.

Meridian Is explores the collaborative process of the performers and how the mediums fit together.

The event is Jan. 22, 10-11:30 a.m. at Malaspina Theatre. It features a discussion and a short performance piece. Admission is free.

In February the series explores understanding and gaining insight into residential schools with the lecture Why We Care on Feb. 19.

March 18 features Cowichan Innovation Lab staff and students presenting ongoing research projects including language revitalization and interactive digital storybooks.
