Sunday Biscuits features The Staggers and Jaggs

Having Tanya Gallagher up for last weekend’s Sunday Biscuits session at the Bean Counter was pretty great.

Having Tanya Gallagher up for last weekend’s Sunday Biscuits session at the Bean Counter was pretty great.

She and I hadn’t played together for a couple years, so it was lots of fun to dust off some old songs and experiment with some new ones.

James and Ilan clearly had a blast rocking out as Red Monkey Black King, and we even had a surprise cameo appearance from Keziah and Andrew Froese.

Many thanks to the whole lot of you for the tunes!

This weekend we have The Staggers and Jaggs coming out, so we might have to move a couple tables.

Although they normally play as a six-piece, they may be giving drummer Kennan a day off to fit in the space.

The Staggers and Jaggs describe their sound as “hauntingly nostalgic,” borrowing members from groups like the Burying Ground, High Society, and a lot more.

They take influence from prohibition era parties, blues, and jazz, with stories of love, loss, and madness, all told through playful melodies and hypnotic rhythms.

We managed to snag them in the midst of an extensive tour schedule and I can’t wait to see them.

Our supporting act for this weekend is vocal trio Synergy.

Never one to shy away from nepotism, I am stoked that my mom’s band could fit into the Sunday Biscuits lineup. The music of Synergy reminds me of the movie The Triplets of Belleville, if Harry Jennings were carrying the bass.

The Bean Counter is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays for the series.

The Staggers and Jaggs will play at around 10:30 a.m., and again at 12:30 p.m., with Synergy playing around 11:30 a.m.

It’s a suggested donation of $5, and nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. No advance tickets necessary, just arrive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for some great brunch foods and sweet, sweet music.
