Surrey stop the last on UBC Symphony Orchestra’s tour

Ensemble performs a free concert April 10 at Chandos Pattison Auditorium.

The UBC Symphony Orchestra makes a stop in Surrey next week, marking the last concert of its Western Canada Tour. And it won’t cost you a dime.

The concert, at Chandos Pattison Auditorium, will feature Strauss’ Don Juan, Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Violin Op. 35 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

“This exciting repertoire is both technically virtuosic and melodically beautiful,” said conductor Jonathan Girard. “Seasoned music lovers will find much to appreciate, but newcomers to classical music will enjoy the stirring tunes and sublime orchestral sounds. The UBC Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest student orchestras in Canada. This concert will be a great experience for our students as they return home from our Western Canadian tour.”

The Tchaikovsky piece will feature violin soloist David Gillham, who’s also UBC assistant professor of violin. The concerto is considered one of the more technically challenging works for violin.

The free concert takes place April 10 at 7 p.m. Chandos Pattison Auditorium is located at 10238 168 St.
