Swing Night and Dance at BSS June 2

The evening includes big bands, dance lessons and funds raised go to music department

Put your dancing shoes on for the ninth annual Swing Night and Dance fundraiser for the Brookswood Secondary Music Department on Friday, June 2, in the small gym.

Hosted by the BSS music department and and Fat City Swing, the evening will include dance lessons and Doug Makela’s Big Band as the musical guests.

Doors open at 6, swing dance lesson is from 7 to 8 p.m. Then from 8 to 10:30 p.m. the Junior and Senior Jazz Bands perform music for everyone to dance to.

Come enjoy dessert and food tables as well as a silent auction.

Derrick Turi is the music director at BSS and said this is the music department’s big fundraiser that helps them attend competitions and perform.

“Our music department is doing well and we are maintaining a reputation for great ensembles and skilled musicians,” said Turi. The music courses include concert bands, jazz, music composition and now musical theatre orchestra. This year at Kiwanis Music Festival the bands brought home four golds.

The Brookswood Musical Theatre Company has staged numerous musicals including Oliver, Grease and The Addams Family where the live orchestra is made up entirely of their music students.

“We are on our way to the Fraser Valley International Kiwanis Music Festival for performances. Two years ago we had a music tour to Disneyland where we performed and participated in Disney’s Recording Sessions Workshop,” said Turi.

This year, the seniors travelled to Italy and the Juniors toured Kelowna. Next year, they are looking into another tour possibly to Eastern Europe.

Pre-order tickets to the Swing Night for $8 for students and $10 for adults. Pick up at the school office.

Students will have to show current student ID. Tickets will also be available at the door but will be $12 each.
