The 55th Annual South Cariboo Square Dance Jamboree on June 17-19, hosted by the Lac la Hache Caribooters and the 100 Mile Twirlers, was a swinging success.
“We had a good time,” says South Cariboo Square Dance Association president Bill Rose. “About 120 people came out and enjoyed the weekend.”
The 108 Community Hall was the venue for the dancers, coming from as far away as Prince George region, Central and South Cariboo, Southern Interior and Vancouver Island.
“This is the second year we have held it at the community centre,” says Rose. “We had many positive comments, and it will be held here again next year.”
The weekend started with a “get-acquainted dance” on Friday evening, he adds, with a pie-and-ice cream social held after the dancing. Dave Abbs was the master of ceremonies.
Feature caller for the weekend was Murray Few from Edmonton, and Rose says he is well known across North America. Few also held an introduction to Contra dancing, a combination of square and round dancing, on Saturday morning, with 56 people participating.
Saturday evening featured a dinner catered by B.J.’s Donuts & Eatery, and more dancing, with Few calling the square dancing and Helen Hall of Lac la Hache as cuer for the round dancing.
More than 80 people enjoyed the pancake breakfast put on by the 108 Lions Club on Sunday morning, Rose says.
“The weekend ended with one last dance after breakfast. Everyone said they had a good time and are looking forward to next year.”
