The Kwerks will be at Tractorgrease Cafe May 27 with their full band to share stories, songs and laughs with their audience.
The Langley-based folk-pop band, fronted by Laura and Ryan Koch, recently got quite a bit of exposure as they pushed their music through the CBC Searchlight competition in March. The couple submitted ‘Lights’, a song about taking life by the horns and living in the moment, and hoped the competition might bring them a bit of local attention and radio play.
Weeks later, they had sailed through the regional rounds and were sitting in the national top 25, awarded by their enthusiastic army of online voters.
“To have this level of success based on public votes is so affirming as an artist. The Kwerk spark is catching,” says Laura.
While they didn’t move on to the final round, Laura says she’s been spending time working on some new material and has hopes of a new release in the next year. In the meantime, the pair and their band will be performing throughout the spring and summer both locally and throughout the province.
On Saturday, they will be returning to Tractorgrease Cafe.
“A huge part of the show for us goes beyond the music,” she says. “Telling our stories, connecting with the audience, laughing, and even endeavouring to inspire people to live a bit more out loud — that’s what it’s all about.”
The Kwerks’ message of living life to the fullest is contagious. They love telling stories about the journey that led Laura to quit her job, send her homeschooled children to school, and pursue her musical dreams.
