The first Quesnel Film Club’s winter season kicks off next week.
The first showing for the winter season is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9, and it will be Maiden, a documentary film from director Alex Holmes.
Maiden chronicles Tracey Edwards’s 1989-90 precedent-setting sea voyage around the world with an all-female crew during the Whitbread Round the World Race.
The second showing is scheduled for Jan. 30 and will be Antigone, a film by Québécois writer-director Sophie Deraspe.
Antigone is a modern adaption of Sophocles’ classic Greek tragedy. The film follows the character Antigone and what is left of her family after the murder of her parents as they immigrate to Canada and find refuge in Montreal.
The film was awarded the Canada Goose Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival.
The third showing is scheduled for Feb. 13 and will be Village Rockstars, the second feature film from writer-director Rima Das. The film, which was selected as India’s submission to the Academy Awards, tells the story of 10-year-old Dhunu, who lives in a small village in northeast India and dreams of having her own rock band.
The fourth showing is scheduled for Feb. 27 and will be The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open, a film co-directed and written by Canadian filmmakers Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (who also stars in the film).
The film takes the viewer on an emotional journey as the character Áila (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) has a chance encounter on the street with a pregnant domestic abuse victim and proceeds to invite the woman into her home and encourages her to seek help.
The fifth and final showing in the winter 2020 Quesnel Film Club lineup is Tel Aviv on Fire from writer-director Sameh Zoabi, which is scheduled for March 19.
The film tells the story of Salam, a charming 30-year-old Palestinian living in Jerusalem who works on a popular Palestinian soap opera Tel Aviv on Fire.
The Quesnel Film Club’s showing of Maiden will be at Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carib Theatre on Reid Street.
Regular admission is $10, and seniors admission is $8, and film memberships are included in the price of admission.
