Crescent Legion’s Club 240 continues to highlight dance bands in a variety of genres as well as specialty entertainment acts.

Upcoming Semiahmoo Music Consortium Friday night dances include the big horn-heavy sound of Big City Soul (Nov. 24) and The Usual Suspects (Dec. 1). The venue is at 2643 128 St.

Blue Frog

Shows the remainder of this month at White Rock’s intimate 100-seat concert venue, Blue Frog Studios (1328 Johnston Rd.) continue a retro-inspired musical tack.

Among them are the ever-dynamic Harpdog Brown and the Travelin’ Blues Show (Nov. 24, shows at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.), and pianist/vocalist Diane Lines’ exciting Jump (Nov. 25, shows at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.), a uniquely feminine take on the era of jump blues, swing and boogie woogie.

Waiting in the wings is a seasonal tribute to a legendary performer – Ray Charles Spirit of Christmas – with Mike Henry (Dec. 1 and 2, shows at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. each night).

Traditional jazz

White Rock Traditional Jazz Society continues its regular Sunday 2-5 p.m. sessions of live Dixieland and swing music for dancing at the Crescent Legion Branch’s Club 240 (2643 128 St.), except for the upcoming Grey Cup Sunday (Nov. 26) .

Next featured bands will be Square Pegs Jazzy Band (Dec. 3) and ace reedman Gerry Green’s Crescent City Jazzers (Dec. 10).

Admission is $10 at the door (WRTJS members), $12 (non members) and $6 (students with ID).

Paints ‘n Bloom

Local artists and AFCA members Audrey Bakewell and Wendy Mould will be showcasing their art Thursday, Nov. 23 and 24 at the Paints ‘n Bloom Fall 2017 Art Show at the Mandeville Gardenworks, 4746 Marine Dr., Burnaby.

There will also be a beginners’ watercolour class Wednesday, Nov. 22., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Doodle Christmas Card Extravaganza, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. ($35 per class, supplies included).

Little Mermaid

FVGSS latest pantomime, The Little Mermaid, comes to Surrey Arts Centre Nov. 23 to Dec. 3.

Written by Michael Balser and Barbie Warwick (from an original script by Peter Zednik), and directed by Balser, with musical direction by Timothy Tucker and choreography by Tamara Jaune and Elisabeth Lay, it’s the story of young Calypso(Yasmin Pena) – a mermaid “obsessed with the world above the waves.”

Incurring the wrath of Ursula, evil ruler of the undersea world (Drew Hart), she falls in love with a human, Prince Airwick-the-Solid (Jenn Tiles).

Also featured are Shellie the Crab (Rachelle Beaulieau) and Katy Perrywinkle (Paige Thomsen) and the menacing Codfather (Adrian Duncan).

Borealis String Quartet

Landscapes: A Northern Odyssey is the title of a concert by world-class ensemble the Borealis String Quartet, Sunday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. at Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88 Ave.

Featuring Ocean Park violinist Yuel Yawney, the internationally-acclaimed quartet also includes Patricia Shih (violin), Nikita Pogrebnoy (viola) and Sungyong Lim (cello).

The concert features a new, intimate and powerfully expressive composition written especially for the quartet by Vancouver composer, Owen Underhill.
