TheatreOne’s upcoming Fringe Flick series begins with the film Captain Fantastic.
Captain Fantastic is about a free-thinking father of six named Ben, played by Viggo Mortensen, who is raising his children in the woods in Washington State.
A family emergency arises that forces the family to leave their home and take a road trip across the country.
The film shows at Avalon Cinema, located in Woodgrove Centre on Sunday (Jan. 15) at 1, 4, and 7 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $13, available at www.theatreone.org or at the cinema’s box office for an hour prior to the show.
TheatreOne’s Fringe Flick winter and spring series features six films.
Operation Avalanche shows Jan. 29-30. The film is a mock-documentary comedy about two CIA agents who infiltrate NASA on the eve of the Apollo 11 moon launch and become part of a massive hoax.
The Eagle Huntress shows Feb. 19-10. The movie is a documentary about a 13-year-old girl named Aisholpan, who becomes the first female in 12 generations of her family to become an eagle hunter.
Maliglutit (Searchers) is by Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk and uses the plot of John Ford’s 1956 western The Searchers as inspiration. It shows March 12-13.
On April 9-10 TheatreOne presents I, Daniel Blake.
The film, by award-winning director Ken Loach, is about a character named Daniel Blake who suffers a heart attack at work. He applies for employment and support allowance. At first he is accepted, but soon after he is denied. Blake goes on a crusade to talk to someone and gain back the benefits.
The last flick of the season is The Salesman, which shows April 23-24.
The film by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi is a domestic suspense film. A husband and wife are forced from their home because the building they live in had leaks and giant cracks. The new home they move to has its own set of problems.
