Illyrian, a Calgary thrash metal band, is touring western Canada to promote its latest album Round 2: Fight.

The group, formerly known as Hellborn Death Engines, performs in Nanaimo Monday (May 15) at 8 p.m at the Cambie.

Illyrian has progressed from a “group of goofballs [making] thrash metal about video games” to one known for “their erratic and precise on-stage delivery, rapier wit and nostalgic charm,” according to the band’s press release.

The band formed in 2011. Current members include Scott Onofrychuk, guitar and vocals; Jeff Perry, bass and vocals; Brandon McNeil, guitar and vocals and drummer Darren May. Perry and May are new additions to the band.

Round 2: Fight was released last fall. It is Illyrian’s second release.

The LP is a “melting pot of technical thrash riffs, blistering solos, prog-influenced rhythms and the band’s signature tri-vocal attack,” according to a press release.

The band previously released Welcome to the Hellmouth in 2014, under the group’s former name.
