1. Surrey celebrates Earth Day on Saturday (April 22) during the city’s annual Party for the Planet, a day-long festival at City Hall Plaza. B.C.’s own Shawn Hook, best known for his hit song “Sound of Your Heart,” is the musical headliner at the event, which will also feature performances by Virginia to Vegas, Willa, Kutapira, Ben Dunnill, Will Stroet, circus act Blink Acro and others. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., activities will include the annual tree and plant sale, a rock climbing wall, a bike-powered smoothie stop, a farmers’ market, a BC Lions autograph session, road hockey, eco-crafts, a variety of local vendors and more. 2. Timed with the Vaisakhi harvest festival is “Passionate Colours,” a new exhibit at Surrey Art Gallery featuring work by members of South Asian Artists Guild. Portraits, landscapes, still life and other genres are covered in the show, which runs from April 22 to July 14, with an opening reception set for Wednesday, April 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit’s featured artists are Shital Anmol, Gunwant Bassi, Sanjoy Das, Vipin Kapoor, Baljit Kaur, Bindoo Matharu, Jay Panesar, Jarnail Singh, Navalpreet Rangi, Neeti Singh, Parminder Singh and Mandeep Wirk. Also set for Saturday (April 22) is the ninth annual Outbreak dance competition hosted by Surrey Secondary Dance Teacher’s Association, starting at noon at Chandos Pattison Auditorium in the Fraser Heights area, at 10238 168th St. The theatre will be hopping with dancers from across the Surrey school district, with more than 500 performers under the lights. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.
