The VSO’s high-flying music director, Bramwell Tovey, who’s recently been to Sweden, Philadelphia, California and other points around the globe, touches down at Surrey’s KPU campus on Tuesday (Jan. 31) for a TALK event (Third Age of Learning Kwantlen). The series is designed to provide those 50 years of age and over with “creative and stimulating educational activities.” From noon to 2 p.m., Tovey will share some inspiring stories, some funny tales and, of course, music. Admission is $20 for the general public, $15 for TALK members and free for KPU students. 2. In another talk at Kwantlen, a story about a transgendered sex worker and trafficked child will be told by Anosh Irani, the Vancouver-based author of “The Parcel.” The KPU Reads event on Monday (Jan. 30, from 3 to 4 p.m.) will be held in the southwest corner of the first floor of Coast Capital Savings Library on KPU’s Surrey campus. “What I love about ‘The Parcel’ being selected as part of KPU Reads is that Bombay’s red light district is a world so far removed from the physical space that the readers of the novel are in,” Irani stated. 3. A free pancake breakfast courtesy of Surrey RCMP, a kids zone and a performance by Ginalina are among attractions during another Groundhog Day event in Newton, featuring the critter known as LouJack, on Saturday (Jan. 28) from 10 a.m. to noon. “Come in your pajamas,” say event organizers with Newton BIA, who plan for the groundhog ceremony to happen at 11:30 a.m. in the Grove area, next to the wave pool.
