Charming pianist Sarah Hagen is set to return to Surrey Arts Centre’s studio theatre with her Classical Coffee Concerts series, Thursday-morning gatherings that get going for another season on Oct. 22 with guest cellist Philip Hansen. Coffee and pastries are served starting at 9:30 a.m., with a 75-minute concert to follow at 10:30 in the Bear Creek Park facility’s studio theatre. At these concerts, the musicians share their music and stories from the stage, and are usually available for a post-show chat. 2. A special Halloween makeup workshop in North Delta sounds like fun: “Learn how to create your own wounds, blood, burns and more using common household items,” reads the event advisory from George Mackie Library. “Teens are invited to join a local special-effects artist for an evening of zombie and stage makeup. We will learn techniques for awesome Halloween makeup, fake wounds, and cool creative results.” The session, on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., is best for those aged 12 and older. Speaking of Halloween, the “Pumpkin Express” daytime trains are already running at Bear Creek Park, and the more terrifying “Haunted Forest Scream Train” rides are set to depart starting Friday evening (Oct. 16). Look for Chainsaw Charlie and bloody zombies on the station platform, located next to the sports track. For younger kids, the “Pumpkin Express” is a place for crafts and activities under the tent on the platform, along with a train ride through the decorated forest.
