Three Things to do This Week (Surrey, North Delta)

Three things to do this week in the Surrey/Delta area:

1. BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR QUEEN VICTORIA:

Historic Stewart Farm’s Royal Victorian Party promises a queenly good time on Sunday (May 17, noon to 3 p.m.). The by-donation event will feature Vancouver Morris Men and their female dance troupe counterparts, the Tiddley Cove Morris, along with the Brigadoon Scottish Highland dance group. Also, “Queen Victoria” will be in attendance to take royal portraits with kids and families. Eat a slice of birthday cake and take a turn churning real ice cream, the old-fashioned way. For this one, don’t forget to dress in your Sunday best. Check it out at 13723 Crescent Rd., South Surrey. For more details, call 604-592-6956 or visit Surrey.ca/heritage.

2. ‘STORY OF SEEDS’ MOVIE AT LIBRARY:

Village Surrey Transition Initiative, whose goal is to respond to “contemporary challenges – including climate change, scarce cheap oil, and economic volatility – by making our communities more resilient,” will co-host a screening of the documentary film “Open Sesame: The Story of Seeds” at City Centre Library next Wednesday (May 20, 6 p.m. start). The screening will be followed by an open dialogue with Matthew Kemshaw, co-ordinator of the Surrey Seed Library. The event will take place in the library’s Dr. Ambedkar Room (4th floor), at 10350 University Dr., Surrey. For more details, visit Villagesurrey.ca.

3. PLAY SOME POKER:

With the rodeo in town, the area surrounding Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino will be buzzing, as will the casino itself. In the poker room, the card-playing action will include tournaments with colourful names such as “Friday Night Fever,” “Big Stack Bounty” (Saturday) and “Deepstack Sunday.” To register for any of the tourneys, call 604-575-5655 or, for more details, visit Fraserdowns.com. Gamblers will notice some big changes at the Cloverdale casino in coming months, as a multi-million-dollar renovation to the facility has just begun. The plan is to revamp all areas of the property, including the gaming floor, facility layout, building exterior and dining and entertainment areas, by the end of 2015.
