A display of oil paintings by Sofie Skapski has gone on display at Cafe Adagio and will remain for the month of October.
Wild flowers, sun-dappled trails and shady nooks bring you close to nature as you sip your coffee and enjoy a tasty snack. Sofie Skapski is a Courtenay artist who works out of her studio at Art Alchemy collective, a group of local contemporary artists with studios on 10th Street in Courtenay. For Skapski the process of painting is always an adventure. There is an amazing point where the struggle between paint, brush, and canvas is taken over by a sort of magic and the work in progress becomes a living thing. While caught in that flow, thought and time are irrelevant — colour and form become everything. Subjects close to her heart include trees, wild and garden flowers, and people caught in moments of normal, daily life. Skapski received her art training at Capilano College, Douglas College, and the Instituto de Belles Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She uses water-mixable oils and paints on natural linen whenever she gets the chance. Café Adagio is located at 147 Harrison Avenue in Parksville. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 8 p.m.
