Get ready for a bit of a scramble of musical styles when Nelson by-the-way of Montreal-based band Tofu Stravinsky joins Vernon’s OM for a house concert open to the public Wednesday, July 30.
Tofu is coming to Vernon as a part of their end-of-summer cross- Canada tour to promote their latest EP, Fondue, said OM’s Orion Miller.
“(The album) features Tofu’s lively musical passion, intellect, charm, and style,” he said, adding the band is colourfully described on its website as “smooth, crunchy, jazzy and hip… The music of Tofu Stravinsky is like walking through a glowing city-scape drinking good red wine from a Coke can – the beginning to a perfect night.”
Having shared the stage with two-time Juno award winner Alex Cuba as well as with Sloan, Hey Ocean! and the Tequila Mockingbord Orchestra, Tofu Stravinsky is quickly making a name for themselves amongst some of Canada’s finest musicians.
Winners of Artist of the Year at the 2014 Kootenay Music Awards, the band features the dynamic vocals of Sarah Orton, supported by the Johnny Marr-like guitar stylings of Tyler Toews and Jon Perry’s cunning synth hooks. The band is grounded by a dance-floor-filling rhythm section composed of Pat McTaggart on bass and Edward T on drums.
Local Okanagan favourites OM will start off the night with one of their classic and highly energetic sets.
With hip hop verses to empower the people, bold harmonies, and creative use of dual loop pedals, OM sounds more like a trip-hop orchestra than a three-piece band.
“For first timers of OM, expect a powerhouse of sound,” said Miller. “For current OM followers, expect some new surprise tracks that evening to further expand your horizons.”
Tofu Stravinsky and OM perform at Maddock Ridge Farm in Vernon Wednesday, July 30. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and music begins at 7 p.m. Directions to Maddock Ridge are printed on the tickets, which are available at the Bean Scene coffee house in Vernon.
