Tribute artist sings his way up in international competition

Adam Fitzpatrick, who took second place in a recent international Elvis tribute contest, will bring the king to Salmon Arm in September.

His heart is as big as his talent.

Adam Fitzpatrick may be the Number 2 Elvis tribute artist in the world but he has no intention of forgetting his roots.

Winner of the Penticton Elvis Festival, Fitzpatrick recently competed in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, moving up to second place from his top-15 placement last year.

“It was quite a feeling, a little shocking,” he says. “I wasn’t expecting it but my name just kept getting called, a pretty incredible feeling.”

Only his second time competing in the international contest, Fitzpatrick’s courage was bolstered by the presence of his mom and dad, his girlfriend, Sandy, and her parents and three loyal fans from Kelowna.

“It was incredible to have that support and to make it to the top 10 – even that was great,” he says, noting that once he exceeded that goal, he simply relaxed and enjoyed the experience.

“I did The Wonder of You. My fans know how special it is to me and I played it out to Sandy, she’s in the family part.”

Fitzpatrick made some important connections including Legends of Rock & Roll. Conceived by a Vancouver producer for Expo ‘86, the format became the international standard for celebrity impersonator and tribute shows.

“We talked and I am hoping to do some work with them,” says Fitzpatrick, noting he has hired a good friend with good connections as his new agent/manager and plans to honour commitments he as already made. “I don’t want to move too fast, everything I do has to work with my life. I know I will always do little shows.”

Fitzpatrick, who began impersonating Elvis in 2008, says he feels blessed to be able to do what he loves to do and is looking forward to performing at the fall fair and again in the Greatest Moments of the  Louisiana Hayride at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the SASCU Rec Centre.

“I know things will be getting busy but, I will still be doing the Hayride whenever I can,” says Fitzpatrick, who first appeared two years ago on the same day he auditioned for a spot on the ride.

“They’ve been so good. they have helped my career more than they could believe. They’re like a family.”

Tickets for the Hayride are $35 and are available at Touch ‘A’ Texas and Wearabouts.
