Outstanding Vancouver pianists Anna Levy and Jane Hayes will fill the room with beautiful music Sunday, March 4 at The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) for Music on Sunday.

The title of their performance is When Two Pianos Become a Symphony.

Levy received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the Moscow Conservatory in 1990. Before she came to Canada, Levy was on the piano faculty of the State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In addition to her teaching duties, she was active as a soloist and chamber musician, having appeared with orchestras and in solo recitals.

On immigrating to Canada she has appeared both as a soloist and chamber musician championing contemporary music.

Levy has appeared as soloist at Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University, Douglas College and Capilano College, in performances of the music of Scriabin, Alfred Schnittke, Nikolai Korndorf, and numerous Canadian composers.

Levy also champions the music of her native Bulgaria having performed programs of contemporary solo Bulgarian piano music in a festival of Central Europe in Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, and a concert of contemporary Bulgarian chamber music in Vancouver’s Christ Church Cathedral.

She can be heard frequently on CBC radio and has recordings available on the Fanfare, EMI, Centrediscs, ATMA, Artifact, CBC-Musica Viva and CBC SM5000 labels.

As a performer and teacher, Hayes has been noted for her involvement in making contemporary music accessible to audiences, students and teachers. To that end, she has premiered many new works written for her and for her two-piano Yarilo Ensemble.

She is a regular partner of clarinetist François Houle, appearing in recitals and workshops throughout Canada. She is also a founding member of Vancouver’s Turning Point Ensemble and the Yarilo Ensemble.

In addition to concerts with the two ensembles, this year she will be a guest artist in Mexico as part of an educational exchange with the National University of Mexico.

Hayes is currently director of Keyboard Studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and was awarded Honorary Life Member status in 2011 for her work in the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association.

Music on Sunday March 4 goes from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at The Old School House Arts Centre, 122 Fern Road West, in Qualicum Beach.

Admission is $16.
