Two exhibits open at art gallery

Arts and culture news and events from Summerland and the rest of the South Okanagan.

Two new exhibits open tonight, May 10 with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Summerland Art Gallery.

The Oasis of Permanence is in the Main Gallery and features photographic oil prints by Frantisek Strouhal.

Through Gaijin Eyes, paintings, illustrations and photographs of experiences in Japan by Endrene Shepherd, is in the Adams Room.

Both shows continue until June 23.

The Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For mothers

Mothers, don’t forget to drop by the Summerland Museum this Saturday, May 12 between 1 and 4 p.m. for a special Mother’s Day gift.

You’ll also be able to enjoy the newest and very popular exhibit featuring Toys from Days Gone By. Ron Rosher will be operating the train upstairs in the Giant’s Head Model Railway Display.

Grandma Stone will be serving her famous ginger cookies and milk.

Digital art

Digital Art Okanagan, www.digitalartokanagan.com, the online community of digital artists in the Okanagan Valley has a selection of their work in a special spring exhibit at Little Straw Vineyard in West Kelowna.

There will be an artists’ reception this Saturday, May 12 from 3 to 5 p.m.

These works are cutting-edge; using drawing and painting tools in computer graphics software and the latest photographic technology and digital printing techniques to create art.

Little Straw Vineyard can be found at 2815 Ourtoland Rd. They are open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

Last dance

The Summerland Dance Club’s last dance of the season takes place on May 12 from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Legion on Rosedale Avenue.

The band is Shindigger. Phone 250-494-7168.

Studio tour

There will be a Summerland Studio Tour on May 19 and 20. Pick up your map from The Summerland Arts Centre, 9533 Main St. or the Summerland Chamber and spend some time visiting local art studios.

Philosophers’ Café

The next Philosophers’ Café features speaker Don Gayton discussing Addictions:  Heroin, Cocaine and Oil, on Wednesday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m..
