Six local bands have stepped up for a fundraiser this Sunday benefiting those affected by the recent typhoon in the Philippines.
The event will take place at the Harris Oceanside GM dealership this Sunday, December 1, where a 1992 blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra will be raffled off. Tickets for that raffle are $2 or 3 for $5.
The fundraiser runs from noon to 5 p.m., at which time the raffle winner will be drawn.
Quality Foods is donating food for a complimentary barbecue and Long & McQuade is providing the sound equipment.
Musical performers include Gerry Barnum, Norm Surrette and the Bony Finger Band, Shawn Carle with Mike Viara, Cruze Control, Pete Swann with Jamie Morgan and host and organizer of the event Johnny Walther will play with Rob Nolan and Keith Cyr. Sound will be engineered by Gary Langen.
The fundraiser is aiming to raise cash donations as well as fill a shipping container with items like art therapy supplies, first aid supplies, water purification systems, tarps, work equipment, hand tools, tents, hygiene items, dishes and cookware, toys, games and baby equipment like playpens and cribs.
Since the last article The NEWS published on the event, a local woman has stepped forward with 40 hand-crocheted baby blankets.

Another typhoon relief fundraiser is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach later that day (Dec. 1) at Thalassa Restaurant at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course.
Tickets are $20 and include a meal and a beverage. The Rotary club will match funds raised and Rotarians in the Philippines will oversee its use. A silent auction will take place with donations from local merchants and artists. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the food service begins at 5:30.
