Laughter is in store for those who attend the next Friends of the Cinema presentation at the Tivoli Theatre.
The Guard pairs an unorthodox Irish cop (Brendan Gleeson) with a straight-laced black FBI agent (Don Cheadle). The unlikely pair is forced to work together to investigate an international drug smuggling ring. Working on Gleeson’s home turf puts Cheadle at a decided disadvantage, culturally, racially and linguistically. Will he be up to the challenge?
With a 95 per cent positive critic rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, The Guard has earned comments like “a modern spaghetti Western on the windswept wastes of Ireland,” and, “There are few things finer in cinema than Brendan Gleeson’s fat, happy face.”
The Guard is the fifth Friends of the Cinema presentation in the 2011-2012 season. All net proceeds from the series are contributed to local organizations, including Friends of the Library.
The movie will be screened on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
