Upcoming events in town

The last co-presentation of the season by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre of The Met: Live in HD Opera.

Art Exhibition in the Lakeview Mall

Long-time Lakes District artist Gerda Volz has gathered together a group of local artists – Lorna Hannett, Lynne Martens and Barb Clarkson -, who love to paint and draw. The result of their endeavours will be an art exhibition at the Lakeview Mall, on display every day from Sunday, May 1 to Saturday, May 14. The group show is called “A Celebration of Older Women” and it will be shared with the community for Mother’s Day and the days following. The show features drawings of Lakes District mothers and grandmothers. The exhibition, for display only, will be at the Lakeview Mall for two weeks beginning May 1.

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at The Beacon Theatre

The last co-presentation of the season by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre of The Met: Live in HD Opera takes place on Sunday, May 29 at 1 p.m. sharp at The Beacon. All tickets are $12, and are available at the door. Anthony Minghella’s breathtaking production of Puccini’s masterpiece, Madama Butterfly, has thrilled audiences ever since its premiere in 2006. Kristine Opolais stars in her acclaimed portrayal of the title role, opposite Roberto Alagna as Pinkerton, the naval officer who breaks Butterfly’s heart. Maria Zifchak is Suzuki and Dawyne Croft appears as Sharpless. The production features puppetry by Blind Summit Theatre. Karel Mark Chichon conducts. And… a personal note from one who saw this production live at The Met three weeks ago: it may be one of the most beautiful theatre pieces you will ever see. So… if you have been thinking about giving The Met: Live in HD a try, this is the production to see. And if you are an opera fan… do not miss this performance.
