Vancouver Island University’s free lecture series examines visual representations of war

Arts and Humanities Colloquium series is Friday (March 24) at Malaspina Theatre

Vancouver Island University’s latest free lecture through its Arts and Humanities Colloquium Series examines how filmmakers represent war in film.

Debra Pentecost, from the media studies department, will discuss how documentary filmmakers represent war, conflict and trauma. She discusses the limitations of image and language to truly capture the experiences. She’ll use the films Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman and The Missing Picture by Rithy Panh to illustrate her lecture.

The free public lecture is Friday (March 24) from 10-11:30 a.m. at Malaspina Theatre.

The series, presented by the VIU’s faculty of arts and humanities began in 2009. The idea was to create conversations and share ideas among faculty members, students and the community.
