Concert on Saturday, April 6 at House of James

World-renowned vibraphonist Marty Franklin and band return to the House of James coffeehouse in Abbotsford on Saturday, April 6.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. The group previously performed at House of James (2743 Emerson St.) in January.

Franklin first came to Canada in 1981. Already a famed musician in the U.K., Franklin soon established himself in Toronto with performances at the Royal York Hotel and Bourbon Street Jazz Club.

He has also lived in Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver, playing in many major jazz clubs and with various jazz greats, including Maynard Ferguson, Sonny Stitt, Georgie Auld, Bud Freeman and Henry Cuesta.

Franklin did a three-year residency at the prestigious Pan Pacific Hotel and appeared on the Vancouver Jazz Festival stage over 11 years.

Franklin is now permanently based in Abbotsford.

His current band is Gary Huntbatch on drums, Warren Grossland on guitar and Steve Johnston on stand-up bass.

Franklin’s vast repertoire includes On Green Dolphin Street by Miles Davis, Ow’ by Dizzie Gillespie and They Can’t Take that Away from Me by Ella Fitzgerald.

This Saturday he will also introduce an original, up-tempo samba number called Latin Caper.

Admission is $10 at the door. Visit houseofjames.com for more information.
