Get ready for a blistering blend of rock, reggae, hip hop, folk, funk, and blues when Victoria band Mindil Beach Markets, or MBM for short, visits two North Okanagan hot spots in the coming weeks.
Touring on the release of its self-titled debut album, MBM is circling the Okanagan-Shuswap performing at Vernon’s Talkin’ Donkey coffee house Saturday, and returns later to play Lorenzo’s Café in Ashton Creek June 11.
Propelling MBM’s unique sound is its array of vocal talent –– two singers and a rapper –– who each bring a distinct element to the band’s repertoire: a love for the planet matched with a love to party.
Pat Codere and Daniel Kingsbury are both 2011 Vancouver Island Music Awards’ male vocalist of the year nominees, while fellow bandmates bassist Matt Posnikoff, Rod Campbell on keys and drummer Cam Ainslie bring on the funk.
Each member has been immersed in music from a very young age and with that passion MBM has been reaching out to more listeners at festivals and shows around the country.
To date, MBM has been billed with such acts as Nazareth, Del The Funky Homosapien (Hieroglyphics/Gorillaz), Katchafire, Ridley Bent, Hey Ocean, Current Swell, Jon and Roy, The Racoons, Hollerado, and We Are The City.
As Posnikoff said in a recent interview: “I don’t have a plan B because I never felt like I needed one. This is all I want to do. This is all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
Named band of the month on Victoria’s modern rock station, The Zone, throughout October last year, MBM’s song, No Time, continues to receive frequent air time.
The band’s new album, produced by Simon Kendall, former keyboard player with Doug and the Slugs, features MBM’s pulsating party vibe, however, songs also deliver heartfelt and meaningful lyrics.
On Machines, Kingsbury asks, “Lord won’t you be telling me, what happened to the honeybees? Tell me why the money tree is the only one preserved.”
MBM will release a music video for the song to air on MuchMusic in late-June.
Mindil Beach Markets’ Saturday appearance at the Talkin’ Donkey, 3923-32nd St., starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30, and cover is by donation. The June 11 show at Lorenzo’s, 901 Mabel Lake Rd., starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $10. Call the café at 250-838-6700 to reserve a table.
