Surrey Old Time Fiddlers organizer Evan Sanyshyn wasn’t optimistic with the snowy weather on Tuesday.
He thought perhaps the few brave ladies to come for the afternoon dance at Clayton Hall might have to dance with broom handles.
But within an hour, there were already 31 people in the hall, dancing in pairs to old time fiddle tunes played by the house band – a good portion of them also members of the Hazelmere Heritage Fiddlers.
Sanyshyn, who joined in 1985, believes the Surrey Old Time Fiddlers – technically Branch #5 of the British Columbia Old Time Fiddlers’ Association – have been around since the late 1970s.
For the last 15 years or so, they’ve held monthly evening dances at Clayton Hall, but they switched to afternoon dances over the winter to make it easier for participants.
The next dances will be held on April 4, May 2 and June 6 from 1-4 p.m., followed by a summer break before returning in the fall.
Clayton Hall is located at 18513 70, just north of Fraser Highway.
