An art exhibit at Guildford Town Centre was four years in the making.
“Individuality” is a youth photo documentary project that features young South Asian women – both in front of and behind the camera.
More than 100 girls and women, from eight secondary schools and four post-secondary institutions, came together with a common goal: to explore whether a cross-section of Surrey’s South Asian young women wish to retain communal traditions, partially or fully adopt “westernized” values or establish separate and unique identities.
The vast majority of the works have been choreographed, styled, photographed, edited and modelled by South Asian women.
“There are 100 different women photographed,” said Pooja Patel, who produced the exhibit, “but the involvement is 130-plus when everyone is factored in. Most of the women are in the Surrey area.”
The exhibition includes young women with cultural roots from India, Africa, Fiji, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and religious backgrounds of Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism and Christianity.
The exhibit will be shown in the mall’s Centre Court area during the month of August.
