Vivaldi Choir celebrates songs of love

Chamber choir brings 'Love!' to St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Langley March 11

This Sunday, audiences in Langley can enjoy an inspiring afternoon of love songs from the Renaissance to the 21st century.

Vancouver’s Vivaldi Chamber Choir brings Love! to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 20955 Old Yale Rd., on March 11 at 3 p.m.

The show will feature guest artists David Sossa, a classical/Spanish guitarist, and renowned vocalist Delannah Gail Bowen.

Bowen, whose career in blues, rock and soul music has spanned over 50 years, is also a social activist, and has dedicated herself to helping those living in poverty on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

“I am the executive director of the Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts that provides open-door (no barrier) arts programming to the community of the Downtown Eastside,” Bowen told the Langley Times.

“Having experienced homelessness and addiction, I am grateful to have survived and be alive and well. The next natural progression is to give back, and be in service.”

Bowen was invited to sing with the Vivaldi Choir by Edette Gagne, the choir’s conductor and artistic director. She will perform solos accompanied by Sossa on guitar and a pianist, and will sing with the choir as well.

“It is quite different from my jazz, blues and contemporary music, which are the genres I have performed for the last 50 years,” Bowen said.

“Choirs have the ability to surround you with a complete sound as far as a song goes. You hear music in a different way when choir is involved — the lushness of the music comes through and creates a different kind of magic.”

Tickets for the Langley show are $25 for adults or $20 for seniors/students and are available at the door or online at langleylove.brownpapertickets.com.

The choir will also perform Love! at St. Helen’s Anglican Church Hall in Vancouver on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m.
