The Vernon Community Singers are busy fine-tuning their Christmas program for their concerts on Dec. 9 and 10.
“The theme for this year’s concert is Spirit of the Season, starting with two songs from the movie, Polar Express, followed by a wonderful variety of traditional, calypso and humourous songs, with the choir’s annual finale of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus,” said the Singers’ longtime leader Molly Boyd.
Featured in the concerts are guitar and voice students, taught by Neil Fraser and Charity Van Gameren, respectively, from the Vernon Community Music School.
“As many will know, the music school is housed in the 1908 Smith House, and the foundation is in dire need of repairs,” said Boyd. “As part of the choir’s constitution, money is given to many musical endeavours throughout the community, in scholarships, school music/reading programs and other service organizations, and this year part of the proceeds from this concert will go to the Vernon Community Music School’s Sound Foundation Capital Campaign.”
The choir recently sang at the Coldstream Remembrance Day service, and were part of Friday’s Downtown Vernon Festival of Christmas Traditions (light-up).
Besides their annual Christmas concert, the Vernon Community Singers will also perform amongst many other choirs and groups at the Rotary Carol Festival at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre, Dec. 3 and 4, and at Silver Star Mountain Resort Dec. 22.
Their headlining concert in Vernon takes place at Trinity United Church on Alexis Park Drive, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 (children are free), available at the Schubert Centre, the Bean Scene or from choir members.
