National Canadian Film Day 150 is a one-day, coast to coast to coast celebration of Canadian cinema and there’s local participation.
The City is Langley is showing films for free in council chambers starting at 10 a.m. The mini-film fest starts with The Red Violin. Then at 1 p.m., there’s The Snow Walker. Both are rated PG. Blackbird (rated 14A) starts at 3:45 p.m. The final movie of the day is the biopic Maurice Richard (The Rocket).
Cineplex Langley is showing Water, the film by Canadian director Deepa Mehta and set in India, at 7 p.m. with free admission.
The Maritime comedy, La Grande Seduction (Seducing Doctor Lewis), will also be shown at 7 p.m. in the Fort Langley National Historic Site. Again, admission is free.
Promotions officer Nancy Hildebrand said “there are still a few seats for tomorrow night’s film inside the Fort.”
“Come out for a night of fun and film! We have about 30 spots left,” she said, suggesting people reserve a free ticket online orby calling 604-513-4777.
The Royal Canadian Legion Aldergrove branch is showing two war-themed films, Passchendaele and Hyena Road starting at 6 p.m.
The Canadian Parents for French (CPF) are hosting animated movies for students at some local schools. They get watch La guerre des tuques (which translates to Snowtime!) at 1 p.m. in Belmont Elementary. Le coq de St. Victoire shows at Belmont at 1 p.m.
CPF is showing La gang des hors-la-loi (The Outlaw League) at James Kennedy Elementary at 1 p.m. At Ecole des Voyageurs. CPF is showing La legende de Sarila at 1 p.m. The CPF film events are only open to students.
