Winter arts workshops offered

The Summerland Community Arts Council is offering the following winter workshops.

Feb. 25: Jewelry Making by Karen Griggs

March 3: Introduction to Acrylics by Barbara Pistak

March 10: Unwoven Scarves by Barbara Wellborn

Art shows

Three new shows are opening at the Penticton Art Gallery on Friday, Jan. 20.

In the Main Gallery is Glenn Clark, First Person Narrative; in the Project Room is Caroline Anders, Chelmsford; and in the Toni Onley Gallery, an exhibit entitled Go Vees Go.

There will be artist talks on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. For more information visit www.pentictonartgallery.com.

On stage

The Many Hats Theatre Company’s production of Neil Simon’s award-winning Lost in Yonkers opens on Thursday, Feb. 2 and runs until Feb. 25. Shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

Musical theatre

Students at Summerland Secondary School will be presenting The Phantom of the Opera at Centre Stage in February.

Arts award

The Summerland Community Arts Council will be holding its annual general meeting at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Jan.  21 at the Arts Centre.

Concert band

The Penticton Concert Band has resumed rehearsals and intermediate to advanced musicians are invited to weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Penticton.

Under the direction of Gerald Nadeau, the band plays a wide variety of music from classical to big band, blues and rock.

Symphony

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra will be performing Masterworks series III – Fireworks on Saturday, January 28 at 7:30pm at the Cleland Theatre.

The finale of the Haydn Symphony 45 will test the laugh threshold of the orchestra and audience as one by one the musicians leave the stage during the last movement as directed in the score.

The Youth Symphony of the Okanagan will be performing on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in Penticton at the Cleland Theatre.
