World-class jazz band coming to Joe’s

Jazz group KØgging from Utrecht in the Netherlands will perform at Joe’s Garage on April 4 as a part of their 2012 Canadian tour

Jazz group KØgging from Utrecht in the Netherlands will perform at Joe’s Garage on April 4 as a part of their 2012 Canadian tour, which will include five of Downbeat Magazine’s top 150 jazz venues in the world.

The band is built around vocalist Norbert KØgging. Norbert is a formally trained musician and has a studio in Utrecht where he teaches his craft.

The band has just released an album of “indie” jazz called Daydreaming and this tour is its Canadian début.

The band consists of Vocals and composition supplied by KØgging with Folkert Oosterbee on keyboard, Tobias Nijboer on double bass and Felix Schalamann on drums.

This is a world-class jazz band.

‘Three years ago it all started with an idea in the back of my head,” KØgging says. “I wrote my first song for a band that didn’t exist yet. Now, three years later, this song called A Silent Scream is on our debut album Daydreaming together with seven other songs I wrote for KØgging.

KØgging’s music is inspired by artists like Brad Mehldau, John Mayer and David Linx. It’s intimate but energetic, forceful but subtle, distinct but dreamy.

In the spring of 2011, KØgging went to the renowned Banff Centre in Canada to record Daydreaming.

“In Holland all band members have a busy schedule rehearsing and playing gigs with several groups. I was looking for a place where we could reside for some time and completely focus on KØgging only.

“I knew the Banff Centre from the music residency I spent there when I was still a student. It appeared to be the perfect place with great facilities in a breathtaking environment. After recording KØGGING played a tour in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.”

Back in Holland, pianist Franz von Chossy was asked to write string arrangements for quartet. This turned out to be the perfect final touch for some songs of Daydreaming.
