Since opening its doors in 2001, the Vernon Performing Arts Centre has become known in the dance community for its outreach programs that correlate with its annual dance series.
To celebrate the arrival of the world renowned LINES Ballet Company, directed by Alonzo King, the centre is holding a non-fiction writing contest.
The contest is being held to commemorate the San Francisco-based dance company performance’s literary roots, said Jackie Faulkner, the centre’s dance outreach coodinator.
To enter, participants are asked to write an original non-fiction story related to dance in 250 words or less and submit it via e-mail to danceoutreach@ticketseller.ca or in person at the Ticket Seller box office (located at 3800–33rd St., Vernon) by March 1.
“What you write about is up to you,” said Faulkner. “Short stories can be comedic, personal memories, moving experiences — just as long as it involves or revolves around dance.”
The winning story will be published in the March 4 edition of The Morning Star, featured on the centre’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/vdpac), and the author will receive two free tickets to the LINES Ballet performance on March 6.
