Okanagan College and Gallery Vertigo are back with the popular reading series, Vertigo Voices, featuring three acclaimed writers who will read from their published works in November.
The series begins Friday with a reading by Kelowna by-the-way of Montreal poet and translator Erin Moure.
In her recent books of poetry, O Resplandor (2010), and Oana Avasilichioaei: Expeditions of a Chimæra (2009), Moure expresses a hybrid of translation and collaboration.
She has translated Nicole Brossard (with Robert Majzels) and Louise Dupré from French, Chus Pato and Rosalía de Castro from Galician, Andrés Ajens from Chilean Spanish, and Fernando Pessoa from Portuguese.
Her essays, My Beloved Wager (2009), are a chronicle of 25 years of writing practice, which incudes numerous awards, performances and speaking internationally on poetry and translation.
Poet and author Matt Rader follows with a reading Thursday, Nov. 10.
Rader’s most recent book is A Doctor Pedalled Her Bicycle Over the River Arno. He is also the critically acclaimed author of two previous collections of poetry, Living Things and Miraculous Hours, which was a finalist for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award and long-listed for the ReLit Award.
His poems, stories, and nonfiction have appeared in journals and anthologies across North America, Australia, and Europe and have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Journey Prize, the National Magazine Award, and two Pushcart Prizes.
He lives in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
On Nov. 24, Harold Rhenisch will read from his most recent works.
The new Vernon arrival won the George Ryga Award for his nonfiction piece, The Wolves at Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century, in 2007. He has also won the Malahat Long Poem Prize twice, and a CBC Literary Prize for his poetry.
Rhenisch writes and edits poetry, literary and scientific nonfiction, photographic texts, drama, and their hybrids, and he also writes about those topics on his blog, okanaganokanogan.com.
His most recent book is The Spoken World, a book of poems about the magical tradition.
Readings for the Vertigo Voices series begin at 8 p.m. at Gallery Vertigo, #1-3001-31st St., Vernon (upstairs.) Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $3 goes to support Gallery Vertigo’s many worthwhile projects.
