Yellow Point Drama Group presents inaugural One-Act Play Festival

One-Act Play Festival held at Cedar Community Hall

Yellow Point Drama Group is creating a festival for one-act playwrights to showcase their work.

The drama group presents its inaugural One-Act Play Festival Friday and Saturday (June 2-3).

Armando Dos Santos, president of Yellow Point Drama Group, said a one-act play is still a popular format for writers, but because many theatre companies have gone to longer formats it is difficult for the playwrights to showcase their work.

“There are a lot of very interesting, funny one-act plays, but it is hard to find avenues unless it is fringe festivals,” said Dos Santos. “Writers don’t have enough opportunities to have venues to show their plays.”

Dos Santos said the festival is a celebration of theatre.

Each night features three plays and audience members will be able to vote for best play. The winning play takes home a prize.

The festival is at the Cedar Community Hall, located at 2388 Cedar Rd. Doors open each night at 7 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

On June 2 audience members can see Rappaport Revisited by Short Circuit Theatre, which is a play about two ex-friends, who are now enemies, who meet for a duel of words. A Skiff of Golff by Ron Dale tells the story of man who has dedicated a lifetime to golfing and is now facing the reality of his declining skills. In the First Wave of Feminism – Shaw’s Women by the Big Production Company, actors will read excerpts from Shaw’s plays.

On June 3 audience members can see Oh Nurse by Second Stage Players, which is a comedy set in a pub and hospital. Two Blind Men and a Donkey by Yellow Point Drama Group is a farce written by Dos Santos. Modern Banshee by Laura Kelsey is a musical drama about a downtrodden performer searching for her true voice.
